CHRONICLE 7 ... 06.13.98

and maybe it will crack apart at it's very seams and maybe molten metal will pour forth and devour half of the earth, and floods will pour down when the polar caps melt from the heat and destroy the rest of the earth. And then maybe I'll survive for one instant longer than almost everybody else, and then maybe, in that moment, I'll be great.

I will survive.

And so will you.

And together we will talk and create and something beautiful and wonderful and amazing and stupendous will come out of it, and we will feel closer from the experience. Perhaps we will feel so close that we will feel obliged to have sexual relations, the closest relations that humankind will acknowledge. Perhaps, then a child will come out of our sexual relations, and perhaps that child really will be great.

And then we, you and I, will be great from our own creation of greatness.

And the rest of the world will have to acknowledge that and they will have to acknowledge us.

But wait... there will not be a "rest of the world."

But that doesn't matter, because there is never really a "rest of the world." That implies that sense of otherness that people seem to feel when they have difficulties dealing with one another. People seem to want everything they do to come so naturally and easilly. They want that so much, in fact, that they overthink and rethink every little thing they do. That's not natural. Is it?

Some people are apt to say that any action performed by any being is a natural action, since all beings are a part of nature. Other people (perhaps the same people, perhaps not) are apt to say that humankind is above nature. They say that our ability to reason and create new thoughts (so they say) puts us somehow above or outside of the rest of nature. I don't know if those two ideas work together or not. I also am not quite sure how I feel about either one.

I am apt to believe that anything that has been done and will be done is a part of nature. I have noticed, however, that people seem to do the stupidest fucking things. I don't know if that is because we are unnatural or just stupid. Most of the time, I don't even care.

Ok. Let's assume we are merely an exceptionally stupid part of nature that doesn't seem to understand even the most basic concepts. That's easier to pallate, and it keeps my outlook on the universe a little more pleasant. Also, I think it could be true, and is probably as true as any other explanation. We'll keep it.

What's weird, though is that there is really nothing to understand or misunderstand. You have to almost try to not understand. I think maybe we humans are just blinded by our own feelings of grandeur. We believe that our own pursuits of science and technology are truly important. We must believe that we are brining ourselves as a species closer to god, right? Do you believe that? Let me know.

-----

I find it ironic that the very pursuits people believe will bring us closer to god are also the most commonly sited factors contributing to the impending conclusion of life on this planet.

For every scientist, there is a christian. For every philosoper, there is a christian scientist. For every dream, there is a reality. For every hope, there is an outcome.

This is not an easy time to live. There are more causes of death now than there have every been before. For every great cure caused by man, one thousand new causes of death erupt. We do not have a handle on how the universe works, and we are not progressing in any certain direction. We know more trivial facts than people from a hundred years ago would have ever believed possible, but we still show no evidence that we are any closer to being able to indiscriminately love every person, every plant, and every animal the way that other plants and animals do. We care more about the goal to which we are heading than the enjoyment of the path along the way. We are simple and we can't even seem to understand that.

I don't find it strange that people believe the world is going to end in about 18 months. I find it strange that some people are too arrogant to even give a moment's thought to such a possibility. So many people are so wrapped up in their own ridiculous lives to even stop to consider the impact they are having on every living thing around them every moment of every day. This is not a game. There are no winners. You have to cherish every moment as if it has never happened before and will never happen again. Every person should be devoting every ounce of their being to the discovery of new ways to capture and relive moments in time. We must all learn from our mistakes and from our triumphs and then teach what we have learned to every person that will listen. One person alone cannot destroy the world. We must band together to do that. You are just as responsible for every murder that occurs as the individual that wielded the weapon.

Of course, that's old news to a seasoned philosopher like you, right? You are surely versed in that sort of common fair. The next step is to act on your thoughts. I feel that it is more of a tragedy for a person to have thought and not acted than to have never thought at all. I have only pity for people who do not think. I have shear loathing for the people who think and sit on their butt, masturbating their minds and fantasizing about their own greatness. I am not speaking about you personally, of course. Don't be silly.
