"Surface-level concern about invasion of personal privacy does not begin to touch on the subtlety and scope of commercial (or consumer) surveillance based on transaction-generated data....Indeed, when one considers how little of the surveillance iceberg is visible to the public, one feels how heavily the burden of representation weighs upon those who would contest the corporate enclosure of public space."

BIG BUSINESS IS BIG BROTHER

... so, big business comes along and says heya, congress, we want to own the internet so it will work for our ends. congress rolls over and says, hey, okay, here's the keys to the information superhighway machine. so, big business gets together and says hey, lets all work together so we can monopolize it all. so, they all say okay and they make all this shit in some bizarre, whacked-out spirit of cooperation, and WHAM-O! now we've got cookies, atm records, credit card traces, professionally condoned packet sniffing, and all the other stuff that adds up to transaction generated data which becomes a bigger commodity than even our worn out wallets. cause you see, if you want to have a super-efficient, high-profit trans-national corporation, you've gotta have three things: you've gotta have the most state of the art information network for instant transfer of information, you gotta have a direct pipeline to the consumer, and you gotta have as much information about that consumer as you can. so, you've gotta own everything you possibly can to control the infrastructure needed to get these three things, and you've gotta own everything you possibly can to make your wares to sell to the hapless consumer you're learning so much about. make no mistake--big brother is watching.
