Heya. This is me (or at least it will be when I can get a suitable picture of myself scanned).
I am Scott Kapel, the wierd, eccentric freak who created this web site. These are the standard "about me" bits which seem to be quintessential on all web sites. For some reason, you addicted browsers and surfers seem to want to know about us, the ones who make these strange sites. So, here are all of your answers (well, probably not, but they'll just have to do):
Name: If you missed that one, go back and read it!
I was born on: 12 FEB 71.
I was born in: Southwestern Pennsylvania, USA.
The place I moved to: Western Maryland, USA.
The one place I lived briefly which I really did like: Limerick, Ireland
The place I'd like to move back to: Limerick, Ireland.
The reason I created this web site: I really love the English language.
The real reason I created this web site: It was a project for graduate school.
What I do: 1) I teach Developmental English at Garrett Community College at Deep Creek Lake, MD, USA. 2) I teach English for the Upward Bound program, at one of its sponsoring schools, Potomac State College of West Virginia University, Keyser, WV, USA. 3) I attend graduate school at Frostburg State University/University of Maryland, Frostburg, MD, USA. 4) I work part-time as some sort of manager and training supervisor (head lackey, really) at Wisp Resort at Deep Creek Lake, MD, USA. 5) I spend entirely too much time with my computer, Elsie106 (what kind of sick, sick person names his computer?). 6) I otherwise wile my time away in useless endeavors.
What I plan to do: Finish my current graduate degree, and pursue a PhD., hopefully at Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland. Continue to teach English, preferably in an environment which allows me to blend technology with classical learning, since that seems to be my thing (and hence why half of my degree is in Computer Science, and why I've made this site). Or, possibly scrap all of that and go work in the computer industry.
What I drive (people always ask me this, and I'm not quite sure why): A 1979 full-sized Jeep Cherokee on the brink of falling apart (but the four-wheel drive still works excellently, and where I live four wheel drive is a necessity). No new, schmarmy Jeep Grand Cherokees for me!
My political affiliation: HA! Do you think I will tell you that? I will say, however, that I am not easily defined in this realm, for I feel that to vote strictly based upon a political affiliation is civically irresponsible. I really wanted to revive the Whig party, but I couldn't seem to get anyone else to join my camp.
My professional interests: English and language, of course, technology, of course, educational reform, educational theory, technology in education.
Professional organizations to which I belong: The National Council of Teachers of English, the Assembly on Computers in English (of NCTE), the Alliance for Computers and Writing.
Professional projects in the works: Completing and expanding this site, creating more interactive exercises for the Interactive Educational Arena, getting a grant written to bring a writing center online at Garrett Community College, and, of course, finishing my thesis (the real bugger-please help me with it if you can!). On a note realted to the thesis, a big part of it is my educational MOO, Area51_MOO, which I set up to teach computer science principles (esp. object oriented programming and network/internet communications) and English composition.
Who am I really?: Well, this one's hard to answer. However, if you want to see something of who I am today, you can look here. Just remember two things: 1)who I am today may well not be who I will be tomorrow, 2)you may be shocked and repulsed by who I am today, but my personal convictions are something I maintain in separateness from my professional endeavors. You must be willing to accept and acknowledge that what you view here is thorougly disassociated with what you are viewing now--that is to say that I will not tolerate professional judgements based on personal diastastes (the scourge of modern society and criticism (look at any political campaign if you don't believe me)). You might also check out my pointless and generic homepage for a general pointless and generic overview of me.
