A Collaborative Site of Things English
Originally Created by Scott Kapel

You are very welcome to The Outlandish English Language Website. This site began as a graduate project, but like most things in life, it has evolved in purpose, intent, content, and appearance. I began the website as a dumping ground for my random and often incoherent thoughts about the English language, literature, and writing, but I soon realized that this limited vision was not ideal. I had two goals in mind when I created the website: 1) I wanted it to contain useful and valuable material, including such hum-drum stuff as grammar lessons, and such erudite stuff as critical essays, literary reviews, and, well, the sort of stuff-of-English which makes it an honorable and scholarly study; 2) I wanted it to have some character and personality, rather than be the dry, crusty-literati style which plagues so many other English sites I have seen. The bottom line is that the English language is rich and fun, and its use and study should not be stilted in order to be scholarly. I then decided that the website should be a collaborative project, and thus it is. I do not feel that people should keep their knowledge to themselves, and it is only by encouraging diverse opinions and views that the site can have any hope of acheiving a dynamic aside from my own. To these ends, I have revamped this site to present it thus. I hope that you will have something to contribute to its aspirations of diversity.

While The Outlandish English Language Website began as an extension of my truly bizarre psyche, and my love of the language, I encourage its use and visitation for educational purposes. I promote the site as an educational tool to my own students, and I encourage others to do so. It is my hope that the information you find here will be both entertaining and educational. Please e-mail me with your comments. I would really like to know if the site is being enjoyed, if it is useful, and what improvements I can make to it.

A STATEMENT ABOUT COMPLETENESS AND COLLABORATION: Because language and literature is an ever-evolving and ever-spawning wonder, this site will never be complete. At the moment, my contribution to it is far from complete, too (which is why you may notice many disabled links, and many pages with little or no information). After Dec. 1996, when I officially launch the site, I am putting forth the offer and request for collaboration on the site. I did not make it for self-glorification or self-edification, I made it as a resource (both input and output) for people interested in English language and literature. I am well aware that one's interest in English language and literature may well manifest itself in delightful creative endeavors. I am also well aware that some of the best creative endeavors are the result of collaboration. I would really like to make The Outlandish English Language Website a repository for people's thoughts and creations (not just my own) of, about, on, or for our language. Our unique personalities and our diverse ways of viewing and creating literature and language make English so enjoyable. Thus, if you have created something or would like to create something that you think would fit in to The Outlandish English Language Website, in all of its bizarreness, please send it to me.
E-mail me with your thoughts, suggestions, or creations, please!

Why so dark? You may well ask why I have chosen such dark backgrounds for the site. The answer is really pretty simple. As I spend alot of time on the site piddling and tweaking, I'm probably looking at it far longer than any other sane individual. I have many vision problems, and my eyes cannot tolerate brightly colored things, especially on a computer screen. In addition, I just think it looks better.

ALSO NOTE: It pains me to do so, but I must set forth the following disclaimer: Due to the unorthodox views occasionally presented herein, and the nature of the literature discussed and quoted, this website may contain adult language unsuitable to younger viewers. I do not, by any means, wish to exclude younger viewers from my site, or from the joys of literature and language which I present. However, I must advise that parental supervision, and a mature, adult attitude, is recommended.
